A day at City Centre’s Piazza
Have you ever heard of sapeur culture? Birthed in Congo, in the heart of Brazaville and Kinshasa, it’s a movement that celebrates sartorial splendour on a lavish scale. Adherents wear clothes of the most dashing cut and unexpected colour, and their appearance, elegance and sophistication simply cannot be ignored.
Sapeur culture is one of the themes explored in Congolese artist Joel Mamboka’s debut solo exhibition in Johannesburg, showing now at The Gallery at Steyn City. Joel is fascinated by the cultural and socio-political origins of this movement and uses mediums such as wax loincloth to investigate further. The result is an oeuvre Trent Read of Knysna Fine Art has called “eminently collectable”.
The exhibition is an exciting progression for this rising star of the art world, whose works have previously been displayed at the Zeitz Mocaa Museum and Youngblood Africa. A visit to see these new works at our gallery is a must.
Why not make it a day, and enjoy lunch or dinner at Café del Sol Steyn City before you head home? The restaurant is part of the much-loved Café del Sol family brand, and our lively piazza is the perfect setting to enjoy the robust, authentic flavours of Italy. Psst – take advantage of Café del Sol’s outstanding ‘Business Bites’ offer and enjoy a scrumptious main course for only R150.
