Steyn City is working hard to make a difference in our surrounding communities.

Better Fourways

We’ve been working hard to ensure that our partnership with Better Fourways creates advantages for everyone involved with the broader Fourways community.

This project has kept our SCMA team busy during the past month, as we lent our support to a number of projects. These included a major clean-up of Winnie Mandela Drive, between Erling Road and Dainfern, which saw us cutting grass and clearing the centre island of litter.

We have also been working towards bringing to life the traffic light project, mentioned in the previous edition of our newsletter. This initiative sees a number of private entities in the area joining forces to address the challenges of dysfunctional traffic lights. At present, we are waiting for the Gauteng Department Roads and Traffic (GDRT) to finalise a MOU and implementation strategy. This forms part of the Adopt and Protect a Traffic Signal Project introduced by GDRT. In the meantime, we are collaborating with Montecasino and Fourways Mall to add impetus to the project. Winnie Mandela Drive has been identified as a key priority in this initiative, and we are looking forward to smoother traffic flows once the project starts gaining traction.

Steyn City Foundation

An exciting new initiative introduced by the Steyn City Foundation sees us increase the support offered to our neighbouring community of Diepsloot.

Steyn City Promenade Post: Delivering Happiness

We’re sure you’re familiar with Delivering Happiness to Diepsloot; the annual Christmas project which sees us bringing the festive season spirit to our neighbouring community as we celebrate with gifts and goodies for seven Diepsloot primary schools, touching 13,500 children. (Please note that residents interested in participating can donate funds to help fill the backpacks with toys, books, stationery and sweets. All donations will receive an 18A Tax Certificate. Contact [email protected].)

However, the Steyn City Foundation is now providing more sustainable support all year round with the establishment of a new Grow Zone in one of the existing nurseries originally established on-site to grow trees and shrubs for our parkland. Grow Zones are a project that our sister company, Auto & General, in partnership with the well-established, Food Security Programme (FSP), have adopted to create allotments where Diepsloot community members are trained and enabled to grow food gardens. And they are, indeed, extremely successful.

Our Grow Zone will employ an additional eight to ten staff, and, at fruition, feed an additional 3,000 children in Early Childhood Development Centres in Diepsloot. In the fullness of time, fruit, herbs and vegetables will also be sold to Steyn City residents and eateries, thereby adding to the long-term sustainability of the project as it becomes self-funding. Auto & General currently supports 24 Grow Zones and 42 Early Childhood Development Centres in Diepsloot.

Similarly, residents who wish to donate to the new Grow Zone will receive an 18A Tax Certificate. For more information, please contact [email protected]

Updates on this project with be shared in forthcoming issues of Promenade Post.

Inaugural Steyn City School Foundation Golf Day – Thursday 23 May

Steyn City School hosted its inaugural golf event at The Club at Steyn City on Thursday, 23 May. This event marked the official launch of the Steyn City School Foundation, which focuses on fundraising for the school’s Bursary Programme.

The golf fundraiser raised money for two bursary students, covering all school costs, including fees, books, a device, a full school uniform, one meal per day, transport, Wi-Fi access, and incidental expenses.

“A bursary student is often seen as a poverty exit point by their family, which is a significant burden to carry,” stated Juliet Glover, Executive Head of Steyn City School. “These students require intensive academic and psycho-social support, including academic remediation, counseling, and therapeutic support.”

Congratulations to all involved in this fundraising event and the foundation’s efforts to provide these important opportunities. These initiatives uplift and support students who would not otherwise be able to attend Steyn City School.

We look forward to seeing this golf day become a fixture in our annual club events calendar and grow in stature.

Joel Mamboka’s first solo exhibit comes to The Gallery at Steyn City – 10 May to 16 June

Whether you’re seeking a one-of-a-kind artwork to enhance your living space or simply wish to have a little culture fix, be sure to visit Joel Mamboka’s exhibition at The Gallery at Steyn City between 10 May and 16 June. The Congolese artist is best known for his exploration of African themes through a blend of traditional aesthetics and contemporary expression. His work around Congo’s vibrant Sapeur culture, observed through incomparably stylish and elegant dress, is a case in point, and his examination of the sociopolitical and cultural origins of this tradition in wax loincloth is a highlight of the exhibition. Trent Read of Knysna Fine Art has endorsed the exhibition, calling his work “eminently collectable”.
