Steyn City is working hard to make a difference in our surrounding communities.

Better Fourways

We’ve been working hard to ensure that our partnership with Better Fourways creates advantages for everyone involved with the broader Fourways community.

This project has kept our SCMA team busy during the past month, as we lent our support to a number of projects. These included a major clean-up of Winnie Mandela Drive, between Erling Road and Dainfern, which saw us cutting grass and clearing the centre island of litter.

We have also been working towards bringing to life the traffic light project, mentioned in the previous edition of our newsletter. This initiative sees a number of private entities in the area joining forces to address the challenges of dysfunctional traffic lights. At present, we are waiting for the Gauteng Department Roads and Traffic (GDRT) to finalise a MOU and implementation strategy. This forms part of the Adopt and Protect a Traffic Signal Project introduced by GDRT. In the meantime, we are collaborating with Montecasino and Fourways Mall to add impetus to the project. Winnie Mandela Drive has been identified as a key priority in this initiative, and we are looking forward to smoother traffic flows once the project starts gaining traction.

Steyn City Foundation

An exciting new initiative introduced by the Steyn City Foundation sees us increase the support offered to our neighbouring community of Diepsloot.

Steyn City Promenade Post: Delivering Happiness

We’re sure you’re familiar with Delivering Happiness to Diepsloot; the annual Christmas project which sees us bringing the festive season spirit to our neighbouring community as we celebrate with gifts and goodies for seven Diepsloot primary schools, touching 13,500 children. (Please note that residents interested in participating can donate funds to help fill the backpacks with toys, books, stationery and sweets. All donations will receive an 18A Tax Certificate. Contact [email protected].)

However, the Steyn City Foundation is now providing more sustainable support all year round with the establishment of a new Grow Zone in one of the existing nurseries originally established on-site to grow trees and shrubs for our parkland. Grow Zones are a project that our sister company, Auto & General, in partnership with the well-established, Food Security Programme (FSP), have adopted to create allotments where Diepsloot community members are trained and enabled to grow food gardens. And they are, indeed, extremely successful.

Our Grow Zone will employ an additional eight to ten staff, and, at fruition, feed an additional 3,000 children in Early Childhood Development Centres in Diepsloot. In the fullness of time, fruit, herbs and vegetables will also be sold to Steyn City residents and eateries, thereby adding to the long-term sustainability of the project as it becomes self-funding. Auto & General currently supports 24 Grow Zones and 42 Early Childhood Development Centres in Diepsloot.

Similarly, residents who wish to donate to the new Grow Zone will receive an 18A Tax Certificate. For more information, please contact [email protected]

Updates on this project with be shared in forthcoming issues of Promenade Post.

Given the backdrop of our 2 000 acre indigenous parkland, it’s not surprising that sustainability is a key priority at Steyn City. Here’s what we’re doing to protect our natural heritage.

Our eco-conscious initiative

We’ve always believed that our parkland is a truly unique feature – and we’re proud that the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital (JWVH) agrees. Last year, the organisation selected Steyn City as a site to rehabilitate sick and injured animals before they are released into the wild, and we are extremely pleased to have already played a role in helping a number of animals of different species return to health. Recently, we have also welcomed 11 hedgehogs to the parkland; an exciting development, as these spiky little creatures play a key role in the ecosystem by controlling pest populations. It’s interesting to know that they are nocturnal foragers, and despite being land-dwellers, they’re excellent swimmers and can take to the water when they need to.

Maintaining our beautiful parkland

The tree canopies in the parkland are expanding each year, causing the lawn beneath to struggle. As a result, you may have noticed that our Landscaping team has been diligently planting more shade-tolerant plants, applying mulch, and introducing ground covers and shrubs in these areas to maintain the appeal of our beautiful green belts as our parkland matures.

From golf to cycling, horse-riding and swimming, Steyn City has all your hobbies covered with a stunning array of facilities – and it keeps getting better. For example, our Club at Steyn has moved up three notches to 14th position on the latest Golf Digest rankings of South Africa’s Top 100 golf courses.

The Club at Steyn City climbs three notches to 14th position in Golf Digest rankings

Fresh off the press, the May-June edition of Golf Digest features the return of the Golf Digest rankings: South Africa’s Top 100 golf courses for 2024. We’re thrilled to announce that our club has climbed three spots in the rankings, now sitting at No. 14 with a score of 78.6 points. This advancement underscores our commitment to excellence, and we’re setting our sights on breaking into the top 10.

Swinging success – our golf membership on the rise!

At the end of 2023, we introduced a new two-tier golf membership, making it possible to sign up for a Gold Membership, which allows members to play at their own convenience with a maximum of 20 rounds per year, or choose a Platinum Membership, where they can enjoy unlimited rounds, as well as a range of family membership options.

It’s been wonderful to see the response to this new membership model,  which has seen a substantial increase in new members of The Club at Steyn City. Given that Steyn City is all about encouraging family time, it’s heartening to see that the family packages have also been warmly welcomed, with many members signing up their spouses to enjoy time on the fairways together.

Going all out on the greens

More good news for The Club at Steyn City: Dylan Naidoo, who was appointed as our first-ever golf touring ambassador in December, is proudly waving the Steyn City flag high. He recently finished in 16th position in the Sunshine Tour’s final Order of Merit. With this finish, he has secured his full Sunshine Tour card for next year and will gain entry into the DP World Tour co-sanctioned events, such as the SA Open.

Steyn City Resident Newsletter - Recreation

He’ll soon be heading to Europe to participate in the European Challenge Tour, the feeder to the DP World Tour. He has gained invites to at least eight events that he’ll be competing in over the next few months. Competition is fierce on this tour, as only the top 20 players qualify for playing rights on the DP World Tour in the next season. Currently, he is ranked 27th on the Challenge Tour. Dylan, we’re rooting for you!

Keep an eye on our track

For all the fans of our off-road mountain bike track, we hope you’re enjoying the latest addition, Mineshaft – a figure of-eight loop located in Phase 2 beyond the polo field adjacent to Pasture Lane. This new segment is also ideal for the 2024 Cycle Lab MTB School Series.

Traditionally exclusive to high schools, the series will now feature new events designed specifically for primary schools. The aim is to involve younger children in this exhilarating sport.

Your peace of mind is our concern, and we’re constantly working to ensure your home is a sanctuary.

More services, more safety and security

We have always believed that our outstanding safety and security measures are among the factors that set Steyn City apart. We have recently expanded on this with the addition of new key services.

Our partnership with Fidelity Secure Fire means that we now have a dedicated 24/7 Rapid Response Fidelity Secure Fire vehicle, with a fully trained fire crew who are also equipped to offer first aid. The team is also able to provide lithium gel fire extinguishers and suppression systems for home solar lithium battery protection. Fidelity Secure Fire has already responded to three incidents on the estate.

Steyn City Resident Newsletter - Safety

Our offering now also includes Specialised Logistics Assistance (SLA) paramedics, on standby 24/7. The team not only mans and maintains our medical room at the Lagoon over peak periods; it’s also on standby at quieter times and assists at our hosted events. This service is invaluable: SLA attends to four to six emergencies monthly, and responded to three minor medical emergencies during the summer.

Keeping abreast of changes

Furthermore, we’re constantly monitoring and looking ahead to keep up with developments in the security industry. With this commitment, we’re working diligently to install new, cutting-edge security systems. These systems will not only enhance your safety but also monitor the movement of visitors’ vehicles throughout the estate and track speeding cars to curb reckless driving.  More on these security measures that are currently being tested and validated in our forthcoming newsletters.

Inaugural Steyn City School Foundation Golf Day – Thursday 23 May

Steyn City School hosted its inaugural golf event at The Club at Steyn City on Thursday, 23 May. This event marked the official launch of the Steyn City School Foundation, which focuses on fundraising for the school’s Bursary Programme.

The golf fundraiser raised money for two bursary students, covering all school costs, including fees, books, a device, a full school uniform, one meal per day, transport, Wi-Fi access, and incidental expenses.

“A bursary student is often seen as a poverty exit point by their family, which is a significant burden to carry,” stated Juliet Glover, Executive Head of Steyn City School. “These students require intensive academic and psycho-social support, including academic remediation, counseling, and therapeutic support.”

Congratulations to all involved in this fundraising event and the foundation’s efforts to provide these important opportunities. These initiatives uplift and support students who would not otherwise be able to attend Steyn City School.

We look forward to seeing this golf day become a fixture in our annual club events calendar and grow in stature.

Joel Mamboka’s first solo exhibit comes to The Gallery at Steyn City – 10 May to 16 June

Whether you’re seeking a one-of-a-kind artwork to enhance your living space or simply wish to have a little culture fix, be sure to visit Joel Mamboka’s exhibition at The Gallery at Steyn City between 10 May and 16 June. The Congolese artist is best known for his exploration of African themes through a blend of traditional aesthetics and contemporary expression. His work around Congo’s vibrant Sapeur culture, observed through incomparably stylish and elegant dress, is a case in point, and his examination of the sociopolitical and cultural origins of this tradition in wax loincloth is a highlight of the exhibition. Trent Read of Knysna Fine Art has endorsed the exhibition, calling his work “eminently collectable”.
