Pioneering Safety and Security measures

Emergency medical response team

Recently, we proudly shed the spotlight on our dedicated medical response team and the emergency vehicle now stationed on-site. The SCMA reported an average of four medical incidents per month, all of which were attended to by our SLA Emergency Medical Services team. Several of these incidents required private medical support, while one critical situation required heli-evac support to transport the patient, ensuring prompt hospital care. We are committed to providing swift and effective medical assistance to ensure the well-being of our community.

Promenade-Post-Q4-2024--Ambulance

Speeding

The SCMA encounters weekly violations of our estate speed limits by some residents and their guests. We would like to remind all residents that they are responsible for the actions of their guests and any road safety violations within the estate. Please ensure that your guests are informed of these rules when providing access codes. This will enforce the efforts of our security officers at the gatehouse, who remind delivery personnel and couriers of our road safety and speed restrictions upon entry.

Regarding speed limits, feedback from our recent resident survey showed strong support for a reduction in the overall speed limit. Effective immediately, the maximum speed limit on all dual-lane major arterial routes is now 50 kph, while single-lane roads will remain at 40 kph. To ensure compliance from both residents and visitors, we have installed speed monitoring cameras throughout the estate.

Promenade-Post-Q4-2024-Recreation-Traffic

Unregistered resident casual staff members

We kindly remind all residents to ensure that their staff (including domestic workers, gardeners, and au pairs) are correctly registered and vetted on our system via our SCMA reception. The SCMA has recently had to address several unfortunate incidents involving unregistered staff being brought onto the estate by residents. Estate rules are designed to maintain a safe environment for everyone and to protect residents from the potential risks posed by unvetted workers. Please note that penalties may be imposed for violations reported by the security team to the SCMA. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

Vehicle Tracking

We’re excited to share that significant progress has been made in advancing our new vehicle tracking technology, and we expect operations to be fully deployed Q1 of 2025. As we venture into this innovative territory, we’re enthusiastic about the system’s potential to enhance our security operations.

NB: Please contact our security nerve centre on 010 597 1111 for direct emergency assistance or requests after hours.

Located on the far side of the driving range, this state-of-the-art facility promises to be one of the best in Gauteng, featuring cutting-edge technology for a tailored, holistic coaching experience.

New awning at The Clubhouse – more space, more views all year round

The new fixed louvre awning on the Terrace at the Clubhouse is currently being installed and will be ready for use over the festive season. This addition creates a lovely shaded space overlooking the 18th hole during the summer months, and provides extra space during winter when the blinds are extended and the area will be heated. Over weekends, this space will double up as an exclusive seating area for our golf members.

The Bunker Project

The bunker revamp project is in full swing, with the first nine holes completed. We are now set to begin the second nine and hope to complete it early in the new year.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to improve the course!

New facilities

We’re busy finalising the basketball courts: the half court located beyond the braai pods in the Lagoon precinct is completed and already open for play. The second, a full size court situated below the soccer fields will be completed by early December. No bookings required, just pitch and play!

Promenade-Post-Q4-2024-Recreation-Basketball

Our new lawn bowls facility, located next to the Farmhouse, is set for completion by Q2 2025.

We’re also introducing pickleball to our range of racquet sports. Pickleball is an exciting paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. To accommodate this, we have converted our third tennis court into four pickleball courts, located adjacent to The Clubhouse, and these will be ready for use from December. Court bookings will be on the Playtomic App as per Padel bookings. Corne from the Steyn City Gym is managing this new facility including purchase/rental of bats and balls.

For more information, contact [email protected] or pop into the gym and speak to one of the staff members.

Steyn City Hotel by Saxon and Guild Restaurant: shared workspace, meeting and conference facilities

What an exciting month it’s been for Steyn City this November, with the recent opening of the Steyn City Hotel by Saxon, along with the Guild restaurant, shared workspace, meeting facilities, and conference rooms.

We are extremely proud to have partnered with Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa (whose management team oversees operations) in this venture. The team has already demonstrated their unique brand of hospitality, where nothing is too much for the guest; a commitment to excellence which has seen the hotel endorsed by Leading Hotels of the World.

Our new apartment hotel presents 48 one- and two- bedroom hotel apartments, a three-bedroom Penthouse and a four bedroom Presidential suite. The hotel has an exclusive guest rooftop pool and bar area, with an exquisite bar and lounge area off the main reception where guests and residents can enjoy delicious cocktails and small plates.

It was wonderful to host residents on the evening of Wednesday, November 6, for a walk-through of the hotel and facilities, followed by a toast to the teams integral to its success and a bite to eat in Central Park at City Centre. From the enthusiastic feedback, it’s clear you are thrilled to have these facilities right on your doorstep, whether for hosting visiting family and friends, enjoying another great dining option for breakfast and lunch, or, as bookings have shown, making use of the business facilities for your own needs.

The launch has also piqued interest among the media and high-end magazines, who love the space for shoots, and the hotel will soon be featured on a prominent proudly African cover during the festive season.

For hotel and Guild reservations, please email Robyn Moodley at [email protected] between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday.

After-hours reservations will be directed to the Front Desk.

The main contact number for all enquiries is 087 584 5555.

Guild restaurant is open seven days a week, from 6am to 6pm with the added pleasure of a dinner service during the festive season till 2nd January 2025.

Discover and appreciate our environment

Growing momentum: Mpact Recycling participation

Cape Town recently hosted The Earthshot Prize, where the winners of this prestigious award were named. The event brought a global spotlight to our Mother City, and our country, while highlighting the environmental challenges the world faces. It was inspiring to learn of the many individuals and organisations pioneering technologies and practices around the globe to reduce carbon footprints and waste; however, the event also showcased the importance of sustainability for future generations.

Against this backdrop, we are proud to see our residents and hubs actively participating in our Mpact Recycling initiative, with 505 registered bins currently in use. Household recycling has steadily increased month by month in the 16 months since the initiative was launched, with an average of 8.42 kg of waste per household per month, recorded this year.

To provide broader context to these figures, MPact currently supports 10 estates under Service Level Agreements (SLAs). From January to October this year, Steyn City consistently outperformed eight of the other registered estates.

While it may seem small, our collective efforts are a catalyst for meaningful environmental change and a step toward a more sustainable future for all.

Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Clinic – using our environment to rehabilitate patients

While the ‘Nature at Steyn City’ WhatsApp group has become a hive of activity and interest, we’ve noticed that our residents have yet to spot some of our new wildlife residents, including an African Mole Rat, Eleanor the porcupine (who was fortunate enough to be named), a hedgehog, and a shrew.

These wild animals were recently treated and rehabilitated by the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Clinic before being released back into our parkland, enriching our thriving ecosystem.

We are truly blessed to live alongside nature in a habitat that strengthens our connectedness with the world around us.

Let’s see who spots them first! If you’d like to join this WhatsApp group, please email [email protected]

Removal of invasive trees – a key responsibility to our environment

This is an ongoing project focused on the removal of invasive tree species. The removed trees are processed into mulch, which we then use in our landscaping efforts. From a water-wise and environmental management perspective, this initiative is not only a legal requirement but is also essential for maintaining the ecological balance. Our estate’s landscaping palette features indigenous trees exclusively, ensuring we stay true to sustainable practice.

Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg MTB (50/25km) and Kids Races 2024 – 9 – 10 November

This year’s Virgin Active 947 MTB Ride and Kids Race 2024 was yet another resounding success, with residents and staff members taking part enthusiastically. This marked the fourth consecutive year that the event took place exclusively within our parklands, making it a fantastic experience for both the Gauteng cycling community and pro riders. It was also a wonderful opportunity to showcase our estate and extensive parkland. Take a look at some of the images from the event!

Christmas pop-up market and carols concert

Our Christmas pop-up market was a delightful opportunity to browse and purchase exquisite Christmas decorations, artisanal treats, and unique gifts. Combined with the Carols Concert, it was a magical opportunity for our community to convene in our beautiful Central Park at City Centre and share in the joy of the occasion.

Of course, the mood was made even more celebratory by the Springboks’ thrilling win against Wales in their final match of the international rugby season, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Our new hummingbird sculpture, which lights up at night in the Main Piazza at City Centre, symbolises joy, resilience, and love. At this time of year, as we reflect on the spirit of goodwill, it serves as a poignant reminder to embrace kindness, healing, and community.

Steyn City Foundation: Delivering Happiness to Diepsloot for the 13th Consecutive Year

This year’s initiative was nothing short of remarkable, serving as a poignant reminder of the importance of the gifts we deliver to young primary school children. Once again, thanks to the generous support of our sponsors and donors – including Bidvest, which donated stationery to the value of R1 million and Steyn City Properties which donated R2.4 million for backpacks and goodies – we were able to deliver 13,500 school backpacks filled with stationery, sweets, and treats.

We would also like to thank the Steyn City residents who kindly gave their time to help pack the gifts. We are enormously grateful to them, and to our staff members, for their commitment to making this logistically complex event a success.

It was truly moving to see the children enjoy the boerewors rolls and cold drinks. For many, this was a first-time experience, and their smiles tell you everything about the joy this initiative brings to their lives.

Adopt and protect a robot

Excellent news! In the previous two editions of Promenade Post, we discussed in detail our involvement, alongside several private entities in the Fourways region, in an initiative to address the malfunctioning traffic lights along Winnie Mandela Drive and Cedar Road to combat traffic congestion, vandalism of road infrastructure and lawlessness. We are pleased to announce that the Gauteng Department of Roads and Traffic (GDRT) recently finalised and signed the MOUs to put this project in motion, and it is now up and running thanks to the efforts of a Joint Technical Committee, consisting of representatives from the GDRT, other private stakeholders and our Steyn City technical team, who recently convened the rollout of the project.

Last week, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela announced the innovative public-private partnership campaign, Adopt and Protect a Robot, to address traffic signal challenges in the Fourways region. The press announcement took place at Fourways Mall, signalling a collaborative approach to resolving critical infrastructure issues.

Following the launch, MEC Diale-Tlabela visited the Erling Road Interchange outside our Central Lane Gatehouse to acknowledge Steyn City’s invaluable contribution to this initiative.

Pictured below are our CEO, Steven Louw, MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, and Head of the SCMA, Richard Mitchell. A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated task team, who, alongside other proactive community members and private businesses, worked tirelessly to get this over the line with government to ensure delivery of this vital service.

Promenade-Post-Q4-2024-Community-Adopt a Robot

This is great news for residents who frequently use these key routes and have, understandably, been frustrated by delays. While the robots adopted by Steyn City will be fully powered and secured by the end of this year, it is still likely to take some months for the project to be fully implemented along the entire route.

More good news to share

Steyn City Properties and the Steyn City Management Association has joined a task team alongside other stakeholders and property owners in the region as part of a Voluntary Management Initiative (VMI), to be known as the Fourways Improvement District. This initiative involves property owners and businesses coming together under a Not-for-Profit Company (NPC) to fund specific complementary and supplementary services, in addition to those provided by the local authority, to enhance, improve, secure, and promote the public environment in the area where it has been established, making it a more desirable and attractive community.

This goal is achieved by addressing key urban management concerns, including:

  • Neighbourhood security
  • Cleaning and maintenance of common areas
  • By-law infringements
  • Council service delivery issues (e.g. potholes, streetlights, and infrastructure repair)

We will bring you updates as this important initiative unfolds.

Safety and security is our number one priority – but did you know that we look after our community in other ways, too?

We’ve got you covered

Whether you need a paramedic or a snake catcher, we’re here to help. Our security team has all the skills required to provide a range of services to keep you safe: we’ve fire fighters, comprehensive first aid responders as well as a variety of qualified trained security guards. In addition, effective 1 July, SLA Emergency Medical Services has a permanent presence on our estate, further improving response times. We even provide air support and evacuation services for hospital, if required in an emergency.

New vehicle tracking

Please be assured that your safety remains our top priority. We are ceaseless in our efforts to explore new avenues to improve our security offering.

We’re sure you’ll agree that the number of new facilities that we will soon be launching will add a new and enhanced dimension to life at Steyn City. However, we also understand that, because many of these facilities are open to outside guests, you may have concerns around safety and security.

Rest assured that the new vehicle tracking system we mentioned in our previous newsletter is now up and running in a proof-of-concept phase, and has been integrated with our Kenai visitor management app. The system will allow us to track and trace the movement of outside guests, with cameras installed along all main arterials within the estate. We are also testing speed tracking as part of the new system. The technology has already undergone extensive testing, first in a simulated environment, followed by live testing. More information to follow in the next newsletter.

Traffic concerns around Steyn City School

Steyn City has provided thoroughfare access to a limited number of Steyn City School parents to allow them to drop-off and pick up their children. Our normal on-boarding processes and security protocols are followed in such circumstances.  The access window for pick up and drop off has been limited and the terms of use do not allow such parents to make use of the broader estate facilities, such as our running paths and cycle tracks. As with all road users, we will be making use of our new camera system to identify any speedsters, and if they continue to violate the speed limits, they will be blacklisted.

Residents have also found that there is congestion around the school campus at pick up and drop off times, making it difficult for them to access their homes, particularly in The Village. We have commissioned a traffic study to gauge access to the Early Years Centre, the Preparatory School and College, and will be communicating the outcomes of this study and proposed solutions, once it has been finalised. We are considering solutions such as the addition of an entrance on Runnymead Road, if we are able to obtain the appropriate regulatory clearances, which will provide separate access to the College and alleviate congestion at the Cedar Road Gatehouse.

Jul 2024
Last month, we revealed some big news that is sure to take your downtime to the next level. Now, we have even more exciting news.

Coming to The Club

We’re always working to improve our offering – whether that’s for guests or members of The Club at Steyn City. With this in mind, we’re embarking on a project to refurbish all 75 bunkers on our golf course over a two-year period. We’re replacing all old sand, overhauling drainage and stabilising the base of all bunkers and bunker faces, while also reinstating the original grass lines. This will make an enormous difference to bunkers that are no longer looking their best after years of constant cutting and edging, leaving soil substructures exposed as grass lines move higher. This should also lessen the instances of loose stones in bunkers.

On the greens

Back in 2020, we decided to replace all cool-season grass on the fairways and rough with Kikuyu. Cool-season grass remains fresh and lush during our dry winters but struggles in our harsh summers, requiring excessive watering and becoming susceptible to disease. This contradicts our sustainability goals, as it increases our need for irrigation and chemicals. Although our decision to introduce Kikuyu was not made lightly, we believe it was the right choice.

In the meantime, you’ll probably have noticed lighter green patches on our greens as with most of Gauteng’s golf courses during these winter months. Those patches are POA grass, which dies off as it gets warmer. Sadly, there is little we can do to prevent this, although our greenkeeping staff is working closely with our external agronomy consultant to monitor the situation.

Golf Academy

We’re excited to announce the launch of our Golf Academy at The Club. This new facility will be located on the far side of the driving range, and we aim to have this completed by the end of the year. Although an understated structure, it promises to be one of the best in the country, fitted with cutting edge tech to offer each client a tailored, holistic coaching experience. Features include three enclosed hitting bays, a golf simulator, top of the range cameras, GCQuad ball tracking units, a pressure plate, K-Vest technology and analysis software to help analyse your swing. A warm-up area, basic gym equipment, a workshop/club fitting centre and restrooms are also included. The Academy will offer individual lessons for players at all levels, from beginner to professional, lesson packages, a junior programme, group lessons and clinics, playing lessons, club fitting, club gapping and repairs. Three full time coaches will be appointed, including Neal Hauptfleisch, who currently works as a part- time coach. Golf Operations Manager, Tumo Motaung, will continue to offer lessons for existing clients.

Clubhouse enhancements

Construction of extensions to The Clubhouse kitchen will kick off soon. The renovation will provide additional space and much needed equipment for the chefs and kitchen staff of ‘19 by Michael’ to operate more efficiently, so that you can enjoy speedier service and a greater variety of delicious dishes.

We’re also looking forward to installing a new awning alongside The Clubhouse in the next few months. This fantastic addition to the terrace area comes with an automated louvre system, automatic blinds, heating and lighting and will create an exceptional area to enjoy a beverage or snack after a golf round or at your leisure. The large Clubhouse doors will also be repaired, allowing us to create an indoor/outdoor feeling throughout.

The Lagoon precinct

Our lagoon lining is currently undergoing underwater chemical cleaning with a specialised solution. We will assess the effectiveness of this process over the next few weeks. The solution does not affect water quality – this much-loved facility remains as safe as ever.

Meanwhile, Richard Mitchell, head of the Steyn City Management Association, has been working with technology and innovation leaders Desert Wolf to develop a cleaner that will make cleaning the lagoon a more efficient process. The final production model is in progress after extensive testing and evaluation of the engineering prototype.

Another improvement you are certain to notice is the creation of a new shaded area by the Lagoon turnstile. This will protect our staff during our sizzling summers. Additionally,  we are planning to install fixed shade structures over the braai pods for greater coverage.

You can now enjoy the special ambience of The Family Table restaurant all year round, even on chilly, rainy days, thanks to the installation of new glass facades that make the seating area even more comfortable, protecting you from the elements.

Our youngest residents will be excited to see the upgrades to the children’s play area adjacent to The Family Table, which now includes a kiddies scooter track.

With spring just around the corner, we’re looking forward to spending loads of sunny days with The Family Table team. Look out for details of the exciting Spring Festival planned for the end of September, in our next newsletter.

Padel courts

Did you know that there are over 300 registered residents playing on our courts with a total 1,584 matches played sinch launching. We’d love to have more of our residents participate in this fast growing sport.

New to the game? Ask one of our coaches to help you get to grips with the rules of the game and sharpen your racquet skills. Please contact the Padel pro shop to register and book lessons.

New play nodes

We’re staying true to our aim of getting your children outdoors with the establishment of two new play nodes in The Village. These provide new space for children to explore our beautiful parkland, in addition to the Dino Park, Pirate Ship, Skate Park and other play nodes already dotted around. You’ll notice the new equipment we have selected especially for these spaces: after much consideration, we chose to install jungle gyms that are made from recycled materials which require much less frequent maintenance than traditional equipment. These also make for safer play; firstly, because they absorb less heat and are therefore less harsh on tender skin, and secondly because they do not give splinters – making for a more enjoyable playtime experience!

New basketball courts coming soon!

You can now look forward to another way to spend your downtime and get fit: our new basketball court will soon be under construction below the soccer field, along Douw Steyn Drive. It will be ready for play by summer, while a second facility (a half court) is planned for the Lagoon precinct, if we are able to find a suitable space.

A warm Steyn City welcome to Temba Bavuma

We’re pleased to welcome Temba Bavuma, captain of South Africa’s national Test and ODI cricket teams, to Steyn City.

Through our partnership, Temba, his wife Phila and baby son Hlela will be joining our community as they take up residence at City Centre and membership at The Club at Steyn City. While Temba’s skills on the cricket pitch are well known, you may not be aware that he is also a single figure golfer.

We’re especially pleased to be able to work with the Temba Bavuma Foundation, which Temba established to leverage sport and education to create opportunities for underprivileged youth. The Club will play host to the Foundation’s annual golf day in September, while Steyn City School is collaborating with Temba to provide educational support for beneficiaries and bolster the Foundation’s cricket development programmes.

Mountainbiking – everyone’s favorite new hobby?

If the stats for the third leg of the Gauteng High Schools MTB Series 2024 are anything to go by, mountainbiking is having a moment. Over 1 000 entrants participated in this year’s event, which was hosted at Steyn City during July – a whopping 20% increase on last year’s challenge. In the words of race organiser Sven Pederson of Cycle Lab,“I didn’t think we could improve on last year and yet it was bigger and better. A big thank you for an incredible edition of the Cycle Lab School Series at Steyn City.” It was wonderful to see a large number of residents and learners from Steyn City School enjoying the track. If you haven’t yet tried out this fantastic facility, we urge you to do so soon!

City Centre’s new show apartments

Our two new show apartments at City Centre have been designed by Home Collab, revealing the versatility of these gorgeous spaces.

Our two-bedroomed unit is a case in point. This corner unit overlooks City Centre’s treed central piazza, ensuring  a beautiful outlook and plenty of natural light. Home Collab made the most of these assets to create a modern aesthetic, underscored by a neutral colour palette with tactile accents. We think the master bedroom is a special highlight; here, brush stroke wallpaper and dark toned fabrics come together in a distinctly sophisticated ambience.

Our four-bedroomed apartment, meanwhile, is unabashedly luxurious. With views over the lagoon and main piazza, the stage is set for a concept that brings the outside in; an aesthetic Home Collab amplified through the use of plush materials for an opulent feel. The effect can be likened to an enchanted forest. It’s worth noting, here, how the fourth bedroom has been transformed into a comfortable and conducive work from home space.
